SYNOPSIS: This is a D&D movie. Probably literally. It was funded on Kickstarter and, while I didn't actually look up the backstory, it certainly feels like the filmmakers decided they wanted to make a movie out of the adventures of their D&D group (and really, who of us hasn't?) and got a bunch of gamers to crowdfund it. I can picture the "get a cameo by Kevin Sorbo" stretch goal. There's a party: Mage, cleric, fighter, thief, ranger NPC. There's a Quest. There's a bunch of Random Encounters. There's a Cameo by Kevin Sorbo. There's a Boss Fight. There's a Setup for the Next Adventure. This is a high-end Smithee movie, not because it's better than our typical fare -- it's not -- but because it's exactly what it aspires to be: A dumb, fun cinematic adaptation of a D&D game. I'm sure the Kickstarter backers were very pleased with the result. I almost feel bad making fun of it. But not so bad I won't be watching Mythica: The Necromancer for Smithee 33.
